Historically, bentwood boxes and chests were utilitarian. Elaborate carved and painted chests symbolized wealth and prestige and were proudly displayed at potlatches. Chilkat robes and other important clan possessions were stored in these chests. Today, boxes and chests are decorative and functional, often doubling as coffee tables and end tables.
